Imperial Russian Gold Necklace with Diamonds and Gemstones
Antique gold necklace crafted in Imperial Russia during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II. Fourteen-karat gold (583‰) was the standard alloy in the Russian Empire. On the side of the necklace there is a hallmark indicating the gold purity, together with the head of Saint George, which represented the city of Saint Petersburg as an official center for precious metals inspection.
The creation of this unique jewel can therefore be dated between 1899 and 1917. The necklace is adorned with old-cut diamonds, red rubellite — a rare variety of tourmaline from Russia — aquamarine, and green demantoids, among the most precious gemstones from the Ural Mountains. Russian demantoids were highly prized by the Tsars and were often featured in jewels by the House of Fabergé.
